Keep It Simple, Nutritious, Delicious: Brown Rice & Kale
Brown rice, with a balancing Ayurvedic hot curry mix (cumin, ginger, fenugreek, fennel, yellow mustard, coriander, salt, pepper, cayenne pepper), sea salt, and oregano. This morning’s farmers’ market-fresh organic kale sautéed with water and a hand-squeeze of lemon juice, (removed from heat and lightly coated with) untoasted sesame oil, and cumin seed. Organic, fresh, simple, wholesome, satisfying, good. This is a GREAT meal.

Hi Ben, I got some fresh kale from the Farmer’s Market this morning and want to try this out..it looks really good! I see the “Ayurvedic” term online a lot but am not very familiar with it. Does this combination of spices have a special health benefit? Thank you! : )
Thanks for the feedback. Use any spices you feel inspired to include in your recipe… In general, spices provide health benefits.
To answer your question, and to be honest… I don’t know that much about Ayurveda. I look at it more from a health stand point (spices are high in antioxidants ).
The “balancing” in this case, as far as I know, refers to its suitability for all Doshas. I buy high quality products. So, for this case, the organic spices are mixed from a small company (with clearly stated ethics and mission — especially related to policies regarding sourcing and Fairtrade…) who they themselves benefit from the purchase. The extent of my knowledge on Ayurveda is that it’s a system of healing dating back thousands of years, and that certain spices/herbs/organic matter have specific healing properties, and over the years combinations have been developed which are more or less suitable for people with different body composition (Doshas). Would be fun to learn more.
The “balancing” hot curry spice mix I use here is primarily for the health benefits (obviously flavor first, too) + the ethical purchase benefiting people for the reasons I stated above.
