Sweetgreen’s Sweetpress “Purify” Juice Gets a Larger Size (Green Juice)

Sweetgreen of Washington DC is now serving up a 16oz size for its “Purify” organic pressed juice. The larger sized green juice contains the same recipe of apple, kale, spinach, cucumber, lemon and ginger as the 12oz bottle did.

Sweetpress juices are organic, raw, cold-pressed, unpasteurized, and made daily. To guarantee you get the highest quality juice, ask if they have one that was made today (sometimes it’s in another fridge – not the display case, because the fresh juices have a three day shelf-life).

This green juice is delicious. It tastes good because of the apple juice and yet you can still feel that it is packed full of lots of greens and very nutrient-dense.

Total cost for the 16 ounce juice? $10.45 (with DC tax). That’s competitive with nyc raw juice prices with the likes of Juice Press and Organic Avenue.

To Note: The 16oz size is (about 1 cent per ounce) more expensive than the 12oz juice ($7). That can add up – depending on how much you drink. Normally, a larger size juice is less expensive than a smaller size. Interesting. No discounts here. You might want to consider purchasing multiple smaller bottles if you want to drink more than the single 16oz serving size of green juice.

Dean & Deluca Launches Green Juice in DC

Now you can get your greens-fix at a very reasonable price from Dean and Deluca in Georgetown, Washington DC.
For only $7 you can have a 16oz fresh pressed (make sure you read the date to know what day it was made), unpasteurized raw green juice (kale, broccoli, spinach, celery, apples). Although it has apples (not low-glycemic), I don’t mind, because I am happy to see green juice in DC! The wave is coming…

Green Juice @ LIQUITERIA (NYC)

Liquiteria is a health food factory. There seems to be an army of employees making hand-made juice and smoothies for the throng of patrons looking for some glow.

I like green juice. A lot.

Bottled green juices done right are cold-pressed and masticated – producing a higher quality juice which is more nutrient-dense.

The green juice at Liquiteria is a standard low-glycemic mix: kale, spinach, romaine, parsley, celery, cucumber. Nothing too fancy.

The best part?

It’s one of the cheapest legit green juices in town. At only $8.75 per bottle (including tax) it beats out Juice Press and Organic Avenue by a couple bucks

**

Beware: make sure you check the expiration date. Bottled green juice has a three day shelf life. Many of the bottles being sold where expiring on the day I was buying them (meaning that they were three days old). I had to ask the manager in both Liquiteria locations I visited to find for me a juice that had been bottled fewer than 24 hours before (which they found for me in the back room.. these juices were not yet on the grab-and-go fridge shelves).

Vegan Weekend Extravaganza, Washington DC

Ok, so I had quite the weekend…

It all started with a trip to MOM’s Organic Market at their new location at Mosaic. What I came back home with is this – a bounty of plenty and abundant living greens:

Image

Lots of Kombucha Brooklyn (and I could do a whole post about how awesome they are!), collards, kale, chard, sprouts, raw food collard wrap (from Zia’s), cucumbers and celery for juicing… also a bottle of motto (sparkling matcha), strawberries etc..

**

This Friday evening, a friend and I devoured an evening meal from Raouche (legit, family-owned, super delicious Lebanese food in Falls Church, VA..). Here a picture of the results of devastation:

So you may – or may not – ask.. What exactly do you do in the morning.. Well, thing is.. I love to cook. So, first thing I do, yes even in my bathrobe – is turn on the stove top and cook something… #SaturdayMorning. This happens to be authentic, whole-spices, black tea vegan chai – in coconut milk, with coconut sugar. (spices include cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, etc..). DELICIOUS. Look at photos of me executing the process. Note: straining is required because of infusion of whole spices and loose leaf tea :)…

Saturday afternoon a friend and I took a big bike ride from Rosslyn (cycling down the Mall past the Washington Monument) to Big Bear Cafe, coffeeshop in Bloomingdale, Washington DC.

At Big Bear, I had the most legit espresso ever. The coffee was so deep, dark and delicious – yum yum yum! Then a storm was brewing… Good thing we were in Big Bear, because otherwise we would have been caught in the rain – a downpour.

*

By the way, Big Bear Cafe has a nice outdoor patio in the summertime, awesome place to enjoy a coffee surrounded by foliage on days when it’s not raining!…

When we got home (we dodged the rain, by chilling in Big Bear) a meal to satisfy tired bike bodies was prepared. Seriously though.. I put this together in a matter of seconds. NO JOKE. Get home, and 90 seconds later, – poof! – THIS:

Image

Baba ghanoush and quinoa tabbouleh (gluten-free!). Both of these were prepackaged, that I bought at MOMs, all natural – no preservatives, etc..   Served with raw, dehydrated sunflower bread (from Lydia’s).

And a little bit later, whenb night had fallen over Rosslyn, Virginia (were I live)…
Image
…the fridge was still full of greens.
Image

So I turned on some music…

…put my green juice hat on… and cut, cut, cut!
Image
When green juicing: choose the perfect quantity of each vegetable (in general for green juice: 80% celery and cucumber, 20% dark leafy greens – in this case kale, collards, chard, etc..)
Image

Get your juicer out (mine is an OMEGA VRT400 HD masticating juicer) and JUICE!!! :D

Green Juice. 100% organic.

On Sunday I made health-promoting vegan burritos.. made with ezekiel sprouted grain tortillas (no flour, just sprouted grains!), sprouts (alliteratively substitute for spinach), and sauteed enokitake mushrooms + chard (in vegetable broth and tamari). #Vegan

And… finally, when I woke up and was home again this (Monday) morning, I made a couple of foodthings before going to work.

The Best Green Juice in NYC?

The latest health food craze? Green Juice. (What is green juice? See my post on making it homemade-style…)

There are juice bars opening left and right – across the country from small town Maine to juice bar CHAINS with over 10 locations in a single city, and Hollywood is in on the juice party, too!

I went on a juice hunt across New York City, and it was quite a trip. Hundreds of dollars and several days later, from Green Bean Cafe on the Upper East Side to Magic Mix Juicery on Wall Street… a few places stood out.

To be honest and in truth, I love them all. There really is no competition. They are all doing service to the ‘wellness and health industry’ and more importantly all green juice benefits “the people”…

But anyway.. without further ado, some highlights of the best green juice in new york city:

One Lucky Duck

One Lucky Duck

Made famous by Matthew Kenney and Sarma Melngailis, Pure Food & Wine created a takeout space called “One Lucky Duck” that serves also as a juice bar. http://www.oneluckyduck.com/

Tiny Empire

Tiny Empire

Tiny Empire is seriously one of my favorites. Located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, I love the cleanliness, freshness, originally and sleekness of this juice bar’s whole product offering.

Candle 79

Candle 79

Went to Candle 79. What can I say. It was awesome. I went more for the food, which was DELICIOUS :)… but anyway, check them out: http://www.candle79.com/   (100% Organic Restaurant, Upper East Side)

**

Organic Avenue

Organic Avenue

What would a post about green juice in nyc be without the staple of Organic Avenue making a feature appearance…  With over a dozen locations (http://www.organicavenue.com/stores), this Juice Bar’s distribution is MASSIVE. The juice is good, and they are getting tons of press, uplifting the green juice market for everyone in the business :)

**

Liquiteria

Liquiteria

Liquiteria is great. A little less pricey than some of the other juice bars of NYC, but damn do they ever have their juicers -a-whirlin’! Great juice, great vibe…

http://www.liquiteria.com/

Love this place, and they are expanding, too. More locations coming. Yummy yummy green juice.

Melvin's Juice Box

Melvin’s Juice Box

Melvin’s Juice Box is legit. The darkest, deepest green juice I have ever had. Enough said.

BUT, IF I HAD TO THROW IN MY FAVORITE OF THEM ALL…

JUICE PRESS

JUICE PRESS

Juice Press. I love the “Gravity” drink (picture above). So grounding, so refreshing…

Their green juice ALWAYS tastes good.

Alas, it is TIME FOR ANOTHER TRIP TO NYC. Another find that I cant wait to check out is 3 ROOTS in Brooklyn (because they have Kejiwa Kombucha, simply the BEST)..
